Wike Threatens to Sack FCDA Executive Secretary Over Alleged Fraud in Compensation Scandal
Abuja, Nigeria – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Yunana Dauda, over allegations of fraud in the compensation and resettlement of 455 individuals affected by the demolition of houses in Gishiri Village, Katampe District, Abuja.
The demolition was carried out last week to facilitate the ongoing construction of Shehu Shagari Road. However, the process has been marred by accusations of mismanagement and underhanded dealings in the compensation paid to the affected residents.
During a meeting with community leaders and stakeholders on Monday, Wike expressed shock and disappointment at the revelations of shady practices. He disclosed that despite approving N1.3 billion for the compensation and resettlement of the victims, the FCDA and the Department of Compensation and Relocation offered significantly lower amounts to the affected individuals.
Wike did not mince words in his criticism of Dauda, an indigene of Abuja, accusing him of betraying the trust placed in him by both the people and the administration. In a fit of anger, the minister threatened to sack the Executive Secretary if he failed to ensure that the approved compensation was paid to the victims in full.
Community members also took the opportunity to voice their grievances. Umaru Godwin, one of the affected residents, accused Dauda of disregarding the minister’s instructions and offering resettlement in a waterlogged area unsuitable for building. Another victim, Princess Juliet Jonah, revealed that they were offered a meager N72,000 per house, regardless of the actual value of the properties demolished.
Wike vowed to address the issue decisively, emphasizing that such actions undermine public trust and the government’s commitment to fairness and justice. He assured the community that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and resolved to ensure that the victims receive their rightful compensation.
The scandal has sparked outrage among residents, raising questions about transparency and accountability in the FCDA’s handling of public projects and compensation matters.
