The political stage in Rivers State is set for another dramatic clash as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South executives have officially endorsed Port Harcourt as the venue for the much-anticipated 2025 South-South Zonal Congress.

This decision marks a significant development as the party continues to prepare for the congress, with the possibility of a fresh confrontation between two key political figures in the state: Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara.

In a meeting held on Tuesday and presided over by the Acting State Chairman, Hon. Denis Nkiri, the South-South zonal leadership of the PDP made it clear that Port Harcourt would remain the venue for all zonal congresses. The decision came after a thorough discussion of the 2025 South-South Zonal Congresses, where the executive committee members rejected claims of a separate congress being planned for Calabar, Cross River State. The meeting emphasized that, in accordance with the PDP’s constitution as amended in 2017, all zonal congresses should be conducted at the zonal headquarters, which in this case, is Port Harcourt. The committee reaffirmed that this tradition of holding congresses in Port Harcourt would continue and rejected any alternative plans for a congress in Calabar.

Furthermore, the executive committee reassured the party faithful of its commitment to adhere to the principles outlined in the party’s constitution and operational guidelines.

They emphasized that the unity and future growth of the PDP would be anchored on the rule of law, democratic values, and the vision of the party’s founding fathers.

“The SEC will continue to align with the views of the South-South Governors Forum as we approach the 2025 Zonal Congresses,” stated the committee. “

We call on all party leaders to demonstrate sacrifice, accommodation, and unity, particularly in the run-up to the election of credible officers who will guide the party’s efforts towards victory in the South-South zone.”

The endorsement of Port Harcourt for the congress is likely to further fuel the already intense rivalry between Governor Wike and his successor, Fubara, both of whom have significant political influence in the region. As the race for the PDP’s future leadership in the South-South zone intensifies, all eyes are now on how the upcoming congresses will unfold.
