Why Wike is yet to join APC – Dele Momodu
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has shared his perspective on why Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has not defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking in an interview with Arise News on Thursday, Momodu stated that Wike’s reluctance to join the ruling party stems from concerns about losing the power and influence he currently enjoys within the PDP. According to him, Wike would have defected earlier if he believed he could maintain his political clout within the APC.
Momodu linked the crisis in the PDP to both the APC-led government and Wike’s actions, particularly after Wike lost to Atiku Abubakar in the 2022 PDP presidential primary. He explained, “There are individuals who lost the primary in 2022 and are still bitter about it. While they may have spiritually aligned with APC, they have not physically joined because they fear losing their influence. Wike is one of them.”
He further alleged that Wike’s current influence is bolstered by the ruling party, which he claimed is using state power to suppress opposition and destabilize major opposition parties like the PDP, Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Momodu accused the APC-led government of working toward creating a one-party state, stating, “The APC is orchestrating crises across opposition parties because they are afraid of dissent. Nigeria is gradually moving toward a one-party state under this administration.”
He also criticized the government’s approach to governance, expressing concern about the challenges faced by opposition parties in a civilian democracy. “It’s tragic that we now have a government that uses state power to stifle opposition, making it nearly impossible for dissent to thrive,” Momodu concluded.
