Why Report On Mohbad’s Death Probe Is Not Out – Police
The Lagos State Police Command has emphasized its commitment to a thorough investigation into the death of the singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified in an interview on Thursday that the police would not engage in guesswork and highlighted that the autopsy report on Mohbad had not yet been received from the pathologists.
This response comes in the wake of demands from the civil society organization, the Take It Back Movement, which, during a press conference in Ikeja, Lagos, urged the prompt conclusion of the investigation.
Omolola Pedro, the Head of the Gender Department of the group, expressed concerns about unnecessary delays and called on the police to release their findings publicly while ensuring the protection of the rights of the deceased’s wife and child.
The organization also voiced apprehension that prolonged delays in the investigation could expose Mohbad’s wife, Wumi, and child, Liam, to various forms of attacks, including cyberbullying, cyberstalking, malicious campaigns, and even physical harassment, citing similar challenges that Mohbad faced while alive.
Pedro added that the police “must immediately conclude the investigation and make its findings public.”
Reacting when contacted by The Punch on Thursday, police spokesman Hundeyin said, “We’re not the pathologists who carried out the autopsy.
“When they (the pathologists) give us their report, we’ll conclude our investigation. For now, that’s what we’re waiting for. Except they want us to do guesswork, we can’t guess; we need to get the report and see the content of the result and we don’t have it yet.”
The demise of Mohbad on September 12 ignited controversies in Nigeria and beyond, prompting the police to establish an investigative team to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
Hundeyin had previously announced in a September tweet that an autopsy had been completed on Mohbad’s remains, and the police were awaiting the results.
However, in November, the Lagos police disclosed that they had not received the autopsy report for Mohbad, despite it being conducted months earlier.
