Why I made film on drug abuse – Nonso Afolabi
A movie producer, Nonso Afolabi, is set to raise awareness on drug abuse with a short film titled, Toxic.
Speaking on the motive behind the movie, Afolabi said, “The movie is to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug addiction, and the importance of emotional control. By depicting a couple’s tragic downfall due to substance abuse and uncontrolled anger, the film seeks to educate viewers on the risks of drug use and the necessity of managing one’s emotions to prevent destructive behaviours.”
Afolabi also revealed that she chose to make the story into a short film to enable a concise and powerful exploration of its themes.
“The short film format can deliver an intense, focused narrative that captures the audience’s attention quickly and leaves a lasting impact. Additionally, the shorter duration makes it more accessible for festivals, online platforms, and educational purposes, effectively reaching a wider audience with its important message about the dangers of drug addiction and the need for anger management,” she stated.
Adding that the story was not a reflection of her personal life, but rather a portrayal of societal realities, she emphasised that it delved into the dangerous outcomes stemming from addiction and uncontrolled anger.
Trained extensively in acting, particularly for film, Afolabi has experience in both studio and independent film settings. She graduated from the New York Film Academy in 2017 and has since collaborated with some notable Nigerian directors.
