El-Rufai announced in a statement issued on Monday, March 10, 2025, that he has chosen to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as a platform to uphold his dedication to progressive principles following extensive deliberations.

El-Rufai, a founding member of the APC, voiced regret over the party’s departure from its basic principles, pointing out that recent events demonstrated the current leadership’s lack of interest in resolving internal problems within the party.

“Recent developments in the last two years have shown that those in control of the APC have no intention of acknowledging or correcting the unhealthy situation within the party,” El-Rufai stated. He also reflected on his significant contributions to the APC’s past electoral successes in 2015, 2019, and 2023, which, according to him, have been overlooked by the party leadership.

“The APC has dismantled its structures and treated its members with disdain in recent years. I can no longer accept this,” he added.

In his announcement of joining the SDP, El-Rufai expressed confidence in the party’s ability to foster democratic values, promote good governance, and encourage national unity. “I have now decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and adopt it as the platform for our future political engagements and activities,” he concluded.
