We’re Compiling Names Of Cybercrimes Act Victims Arrested By IGP Egbetokun, Spokesman Adejobi –Sowore
He stated that conversations are ongoing to identify Nigerians who have been arrested and prosecuted for their Facebook posts under the guise of violating the Cybercrimes Act 2024.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore announced that they have begun compiling the names of Nigerians who have been unlawfully harassed and arrested under the Cybercrimes Act 2024 by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
He made this statement in Abuja shortly after the court adjourned the criminal defamation suit filed against him by the Nigerian police on behalf of Senator Ned Nwoko.
He mentioned that discussions are ongoing to address excesses and resist any measures and actions by security agents in the country, especially the police, in violating the fundamental human rights of Nigerian citizens.
He expressed his concern over how innocent Nigerians and outspoken individuals have been subjected to the harrowing and excruciating pain of illegal detention, brutality, and attacks by the Nigerian police on trumped-up charges related to Cybercrimes violations.
He stated that conversations are ongoing to identify Nigerians who have been arrested and prosecuted for their Facebook posts under the guise of violating the Cybercrimes Act 2024.
He said, “Right now, we are working on police and conversations are ongoing to ensure that we identify everybody that has been arrested over cybercrimes and Facebook posts bullying that is happening, led by very evil Muyiwa Adejobi and the illegal Inspector General of Police, who has been giving him oxygen to harass and arrest anybody for Facebook posts.”
Sowore also mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding the need to improve police welfare and ensure the adequate payment of pensions and gratuities, especially for ranks from the Commissioner of Police downward.
“What has happened is unbelievable in Nigeria; that is, from the Inspector General of Police to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), there are on a different pension scheme. Anybody that is from Commissioner of Police to constable, they are on slavish pension scheme.
“That is to say when they are done with 35 years of service, they get the gratuity of less than N2 million.
During the resumed hearing of the cyberstalking lawsuit filed against the activist on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the prosecution counsel informed the court that he had misplaced the motion served on him.
He had approached the court for a duplicate copy to enable him to respond to it fairly.
As a result, Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the case to May 5, 2025.
It is worth noting that Sowore is on trial before Justice Suleiman Musa Liman on a 16-count charge filed against him by the Inspector General of Police Egbetokun for allegedly calling him an ‘illegal IGP’ on his ‘X’ handle.
