We can defeat COVID-19 without Chinese doctors- NMA
The President of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Dr Francis Adedayo Faduyile has assured that Nigerian health workers have the capacity to tackle Coronavirus, without inviting the Chinese Doctors.
The NMA president who didn’t oppose the involvement of the foreign medical practitioners, however, said it wasn’t necessary for them to come to Nigeria before sharing experiences with Nigerian doctors.
He said that COVID-19 cases in Nigeria is not up to 500 which he said has not overwhelmed health workforce in the country.
He said: “The issue about Chinese Doctors is an issue that has a lot of deceit in their coming .
“They said they want to come and share experience which is good ,which we are not oppose to.
“However, in sharing of experience we can always have that done through teleconferencing , we have zoom, skype and many other platforms in which we can do that .
“We wonder why they have to physically come to the country because the government of Nigeria has placed a ban on coming and out of the country, if they want to lift such ban, does that mean those that are coming have an important duty to perform in the country? We believed if is to share experience, we have other means of sharing experience, they don’t need to lift that ban. We are suspicious of their coming.
“You can not go from country to other and start practice your profession without passing through the necessary regulation and documentation with the council controlling that profession .
“For example, Nigerian High Commission in US can not bring some Nigerians to United State to start treating them. If they want to treat anybody in CCECC, what about other Nigerians who are there?
He described it as a very wrong thing for any professional to come to another sovereign country where there are equal professional members without consulting them.
“We are not saying we have the capacity if we have mass infection, but as it is, it is still within our reach to treat”, he added.
Speaking on the welfare of Nigerian health workers, the NMA President assured of the commitment of the association leadership to discuss with the government through the ministry of health for a medical insurance and incentives to motivate them.
