In a significant move aimed at enhancing collaboration and alignment on global objectives, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Nigeria, has officially invited Ambassador Timothy Nwachukwu, the National Coordinator, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) National Students Council, (Office Of The Senior Special Assistant To The President of Nigeria on Students Engagement) to participate in an upcoming stakeholders meeting on Thursday, 13 February 2025. This gathering is expected to focus on the key priorities set forth by the United Nations for the year 2025, a pivotal year on the global development agenda.

Amb. Nwachukwu’s invitation is a testament to his commitment to advancing the SDG agenda in Nigeria. As the National Coordinator of the SDG National Students Council, he has shown commitment in mobilizing stakeholders across the country to support the implementation of the 17 Global Goals. His leadership has witnessed unprecedented engagement and progress in key areas such as poverty reduction, quality education, ending inequalities, gender equality, and climate action.

The year 2025 holds particular significance for the United Nations, marking a strategic point in the progress evaluation and implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UN’s 2025 priorities meeting is expected to focus on several pressing issues, including Climate Change, the Pact for the Future, Human Rights, accelerating progress towards the SDGs, revitalizing commitments to the SDGs, while ensuring that no one is left behind.

“I am honored by this invitation and the opportunity to represent the youth voice at this critical gathering,” Amb. Nwachukwu expressed. “The SDGs present a once-in-a-generation chance to catalyze a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient world for all. I look forward to engaging with fellow leaders to chart a bold path forward and ensure that no one is left behind.”

The meeting comes at a pivotal moment, with only five years remaining to achieve the ambitious targets outlined in the 2030 Agenda. Amb. Nwachukwu’s participation will be crucial in securing commitments and inspiring collective action to bridge the remaining gaps and overcome the hurdles to achieving the SDGs in Nigeria and beyond.

In the lead-up to the meeting, Amb. Nwachukwu has been engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, from government officials and business leaders to civil society organizations and community groups, to gather input and ideas. He has emphasized the need for inclusive and participatory approaches, highlighting the critical role that each sector must play in co-delivering the SDGs.

“The SDGs are a shared responsibility that requires the active involvement of all segments of society,” Amb. Nwachukwu underscored. “From policymakers to the private sector, academia to local communities, we must work together to drive transformative change and ensure that the benefits of sustainable development are enjoyed by all Nigerians.”
