UNESCO To Partner SDG National Council As Dr. Idowu, Secretary General, Natcom UNESCO Hosts Amb. Nwachukwu
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will collaborate with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) National Students Council, Office Of The Senior Special Assistant To The President of Nigeria on Students Engagement towards the localisation of Sdgs in Nigeria’s Educational Institutions.
This was disclosed by Dr. Lateef Idowu, the Secretary-General of the Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO (NATCOM UNESCO), when the SDG National Students Council led by its National Coordinator, Ambassador Timothy Nwachukwu paid a courtesy visit to the NATCOM UNESCO office in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.
Dr. Idowu, expressed UNESCO’s commitment to advancing the SDGs, particularly Goal 4 which focuses on quality education. He praised the SDG council for its commitment in promoting the SDGs among Nigerian Students and Youths and pledged UNESCO’s full support
“UNESCO is dedicated to the SDGs and we believe the youth have a critical role to play in achieving them,” Dr. Idowu stated. “We look forward to working closely with the SDG National Students Council to inspire and empower students across Nigeria to be champions of the global goals.”
“The SDGs are not just the business of governments and policymakers,” Dr. Idowu stated. “They demand the active involvement of all stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, and most importantly, the Students and youth. That is why NATCOM UNESCO is proud to identify with the work of the SDG National Students Council.”
Ambassador Nwachukwu, in his response, thanked Dr. Idowu and the NATCOM UNESCO team for their warm welcome and support. He commended Dr. Idowu for his tireless efforts in inspiring and empowering Nigerian Students and youths in the areas of quality education, scholarships and in attracting global opportunities for Nigerian Students.
He also shared the plan of the Sdg Council to mobilize and engage Nigerian students in all educational institutions across Nigeria, towards the actualisation of the SDGs through advocacy, awareness-raising, and project implementation.
Ambassador Nwachukwu noted, “”We are deeply appreciative of Dr. Idowu’s leadership and partnership. His dedication to youth empowerment and commitment to the SDGs is an inspiration to us all. “we are excited about the collaboration to empower Nigerian students to become ambassadors of the global goals and drive positive change in our nation and the world”.
“This partnership with UNESCO will enable us to reach and educate more students, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to become drivers of positive change in their communities.” He said.
The high point of the visit was the acceptance and commitment of Dr Idowu to further support the Council in advisory capacity by guiding the Council to achieve it’s set objectives of achieving the ambitious 2030 Agenda by harnessing the energy, ingenuity and creativity of young people who constitute over 70% of Nigeria’s population.
