Two drug traffickers using fake Presidency number plates sentenced to 35 years
Two drug traffickers arrested in 2024 for attempting to smuggle a massive haul of cannabis in vehicles bearing fake presidency number plates have each been sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Operatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), working in partnership with military personnel, intercepted the traffickers near the Numan Bridge in Adamawa State.
The operation led to the seizure of 626 blocks of cannabis, weighing a total of 500.8 kilograms, hidden in two tinted vehicles: a Toyota Hilux (Lagos NT 829 AAA) and a Prado SUV (01B-266 FG). Both vehicles were equipped with fake number plates, likely intended to mislead traffic security personnel and evade proper inspection.
The suspects, Shuaibu Nuhu Isa, 55, and Zidon Zurga, 50, were apprehended on November 25, 2024, along the Numan-Yola road.
Following their arrest, legal proceedings were initiated, and after a trial before Justice Bala Usman of the Federal High Court in Yola, the two men were convicted on March 7, 2025, and sentenced to 35 years each. The court also ordered the forfeiture of the two vehicles used in the illegal operation.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State expressed his commendation for the efforts of the NDLEA and security agencies in tackling drug trafficking, praising their commitment to keeping the state free from illegal substances.
He also urged individuals grappling with drug addiction to seek help and work towards a positive contribution to society.
