Tragedy in Rivers State as Another Building Collapses
A two-storey building under construction in Egbelu Mgbaraja, Ogbogoro Community, within the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, collapsed on Monday, resulting in one death and another person suffering serious injuries
The incident, which occurred around 2 p.m., marks the second building collapse in the area within just a week. Witnesses reported that the structure gave way while workers were on the second floor.
Udeme, a young worker from Akwa Ibom State, tragically lost his life in the collapse, while another individual narrowly escaped but sustained severe injuries. Eyewitness Jonathan Obey attributed the disaster to the use of poor-quality materials and inadequate structural support, stating, “They used low-quality materials despite building a two-storey structure. The foundation was weak, with insufficient cement and rods, and the decking had no centre pillar or beam.”
Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Evans Bipi, visited the site following the collapse. He ordered the construction site sealed and declared the developer wanted for the incident. Bipi criticized the lack of government approval for the project and the use of substandard materials, promising strict enforcement of safety regulations.
In a statement, Bipi extended condolences to the family of the deceased, while Commissioner for Special Duties Samuel Anya condemned the developer’s negligence regarding safety standards, emphasizing that accountability is necessary for all parties involved.
