Tragedy as school building collapses, students injured
A tragic incident occurred at the Government Girls Science Technical College along Gombe Road in Potiskum, Yobe State.
The Nigerian Television Authority on Thursday reported that a building housing classrooms suddenly collapsed during school hours, leaving several female students injured and one dead.
“The structure caved in without warning, sending debris crashing down on students who were in the midst of their lessons,” it said.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as teachers and fellow students scrambled to rescue those trapped under the rubble.
The affected students were quickly rushed to the Specialist Hospital Potiskum, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Authorities swiftly responded to the emergency, NTA confirmed.
The Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Abba Adam, alongside the Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Science and Technical Education Board, Dr Dauda Atiyaye, visited both the scene of the collapse and the hospital to assess the situation and provide support.
While the exact cause of the building collapse remains unknown, preliminary reports indicate that the structure may have been compromised due to poor maintenance or structural weaknesses.
“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident and are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause,” said Adam.
Amid the devastation, the loss of one female student has cast a sombre shadow over the community.
Meanwhile, PUNCH Online reports that there have yet to be an official release on the incident by the state government.
Reports suggest that she was standing under the veranda when the roof collapsed, fatally striking her.
Parents, school staff, and local authorities are demanding answers and urgent measures to prevent future occurrences.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy. We need to ensure the safety of our children in schools,” said a concerned parent who rushed to the scene after hearing the news.
The incident occurred approximately 100 kilometres from Damaturu, the state capital, according to NTA.
As investigations continue, the government officials have assured the public that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure the structural integrity of school buildings across the state.
