Toboco Control Act can generate Revenue for Imo government if….., Civil Society group.
A delegations from Civil Society legislative Advocacy Centre led by it’s Project manager Okeke Anya over the weekend visited the Imo state Secretariat to brief some of the key ministries the need to talk to Imo state government and explain the reason Imo state should join other states who is already benefiting from enacting the toboco control act.
According to him, statics has shown that more than 10million people in Nigeria die in country or state where there is no Toboco law. He further noted that, there are alot of abuses by young people living in a place where this toboco control law is not in practice.
The delegation, explained that, the law reduces diseases, increase revenue of the state, while explaining the reason of their visit was to seek audience with some this key ministries in the state.
The objectives of this law are to Protect present and future generations of Imo State indigenes and residents in Imo State from the devastating health, social, economic, and environmental consequences of use of or exposure to tobacco or tobacco products and exposure to tobacco or tobacco product smoke;
Once enacted, It will also Promote and protect Imo State indigenes rights to health, life, physical integrity, safe and healthy work places, and other rights adversely impacted by tobacco or tobacco product smoke exposure;
According to them if the law is implemented and approved by Imo government it will go a long way to discourage smoking initiation, encourage stoppage of tobacco or tobacco product smoking and reduce tobacco or tobacco product consumption through measures provided in this law, including through behavior and norm changes brought about by smoke-free environments and Prevent or substantially reduce the accessibility of tobacco or tobacco products to young people.
Some of the ministries visited include Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Environment,
Ministry of Finance.
