Tinubu reacts as National Assembly approves Rivers emergency rule
President Bola Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for approving the emergency declaration in Rivers State, describing it as a necessary step to restore order after months of political turmoil.
The decision, he said, was crucial in addressing the governance breakdown that had put both the state and the country’s economic stability at risk.
Tinubu acknowledged Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for setting aside political differences to prioritize the safety and well-being of Rivers residents.
According to him, their careful assessment of security reports made it clear that urgent intervention was needed to prevent the crisis from worsening.
He explained that the situation had reached a dangerous level, posing threats to vital oil and gas facilities and slowing down economic reforms initiated since his administration took office in May 2023.
In his national address on March 18, Tinubu had pointed out that the near-collapse of governance in Rivers State, combined with risks to federal assets and rising tensions, left no other choice but to act swiftly.
The emergency measure, which will last for six months, gives the newly appointed Sole Administrator the authority to stabilize the state, resolve major governance issues, and encourage dialogue among opposing factions.
Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to working with the National Assembly to strengthen peace, economic recovery, and national development.
He expressed confidence that the National Assembly’s decision reflects what can be achieved when leaders act with unity and a sense of duty.
Tinubu also called on Nigerians to support efforts to bring lasting peace to Rivers State.
