Three unregistered trucks collide, paralyse Lagos Port access road traffic
Three articulated trucks without registered plate numbers collided in a head-on crash over the weekend, paralysing vehicular movement along the major access road leading to the Apapa Port in Lagos.
Disclosing this in a statement, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, revealed that although there were no fatalities, the crash caused considerable disruption to traffic flow within the area.
According to the LASTMA statement, “The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a grievous road traffic incident involving three heavy-duty trucks at the Flour Mills corridor inward Airways, Apapa.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the accident was precipitated by an empty flatbed truck which, in flagrant violation of traffic laws, drove against the authorised flow (one-way) and collided head-on with two oncoming container-laden Mark trucks. Thankfully, no fatalities were recorded, though the crash caused considerable disruption to traffic flow within the axis.
“Notably, those trucks were discovered to be devoid of visible registration plates—an egregious breach of traffic and vehicle identification regulations.
“LASTMA operatives swiftly deployed to the scene undertook immediate traffic management and safety control measures before formally transferring custody of the vehicles to the Traffic Division of Area ‘B’ Command, Nigeria Police Force, Apapa, for further investigation.”
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, while condemning the lawless and hazardous behaviour exhibited by some truck drivers, issued a stern warning to all motorists—especially operators of articulated vehicles—to abstain from driving against the designated traffic flow, an act punishable under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
Mr. Bakare-Oki reiterated that any vehicle apprehended for contravening this law would not only be impounded but also subjected to full prosecutorial processes in line with existing legal provisions.
“LASTMA remains unwavering in its mandate to restore order and civility on Lagos roads through diligent enforcement, sustained public enlightenment, and strategic stakeholder engagement,” the LASTMA General Manager added.
