In August 2023, photos of three men, purportedly Nigerians, circulated on Facebook, claiming they were arrested in Cambodia for drug trafficking and sentenced to death.

Many captions urged users to share the images to inform the suspects’ parents. One post read, “Breaking News: Three Nigerian Men who were caught with cocaine ‘ice’ in Cambodia have been charged to death sentence! Continue sharing until it gets to their various parents.”

However, these photos do not depict recent news of Nigerians arrested for drug offenses, as suggested by the posts.

The arrests actually occurred in July 2019 during a crackdown on illegal drug trafficking in Cambodia’s Dangkor district, resulting in the apprehension of three Nigerians.

They were accused of trafficking over 20 kilograms of illegal drugs, although the specific type was not mentioned in the report.

Contrary to the claims, there is no provision for the death penalty for drug trafficking in Cambodia’s legal framework. Instead, the country’s Law on Control of Drugs outlines fines and imprisonment as penalties for various drug-related offenses.

Therefore, there is no evidence to support the assertion that these three Nigerians were sentenced to death. It should also be noted that these images are from 2019, not recent “breaking news” in 2023.
