Tension As Chinese Warship Arrives Nigeria

A warship belonging to the Navy of the People’s Republic of China has landed the shores of Nigeria. The warship, named MSL Destroyer NANNING arrived Lagos Sunday morning.

NEWS WEEK NIGERIA gathered that the warship is in Nigeria on a diplomatic visit. The vessel was received by officials of the Western Naval Command led by Flag Officer Commanding(FOC) Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan.

As at the time of filing this report, neither the government of Nigeria nor the Chinese government is yet to release official statement on the development. In 2014 several Chinese naval vessels arrived in Nigeria for a friendship visit, where they conducted training exercises with the Nigerian Navy.

The 16th naval escort squad arrived in Lagos on a Saturday included the Type 054A guided missile frigate Yancheng, the Type 053H guided missile frigate Luoyang and the supply ship Taihu. Chinese warship The Chinese fleet and its 600 plus crew were welcomed by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Gu Xiaojie and Rear Admiral E.G. Ofik, chief staff officer of Nigerian Western Naval Command.
