Teenage Boy, eight others remanded in Prison over alleged murder of 7-year-old Girl
An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on Friday ordered the remand of nine accused persons in a correctional facility over alleged murder of a minor.

The defendants, who were charged with conspiracy, murder and arson are: 19-year-old Sunday Moses, Lukuman Aremu, 23, and Rasheed Abdulahi, 20.
Others are: Abioye Ojo, 21, Kazeem Olayiwola, 40, Oladipupo Abass, 34, Abdulrahnan Isiaka, 21, Lukman Awujoola, 23 and Adelowo Ojo (adult).

The Magistrate, Mrs Olasinmibo Sanusi-Zubair, did not take the plea of the defendants for want of jurisdiction.
She directed the police to return the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

She, therefore adjourned the case until May 20 for mention.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Olagoke Adegbenro, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on April 16, at Ikoyi-Ile, Oyo State.

He alleged that the defendants unlawfully caused the death of seven-year-old Burirat Hamzat, by stabbing her with a knife.
He said the defendants also unlawfully set fire to houses belonging to Muhammed Useni, Usman Abubakar, and Abdulahi Abubakar.

Adegbenro said the burnt houses were valued at N150 million.
He said the offences contravened Sections 516, 319 and 443 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000. (NAN)

Don’t quit your Party but support President Tinubu, group tells PDP Governor
A political group, Osun Leaders of Thought (OLT), has urged Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun not to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The group said this in a statement issued by its Chief of Public Affairs, Mr Adesola Adigun, in Osogbo on Friday.
It said rather than leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the governor should fully support the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The political group said that the admonition was in response to the raging agreement of defection and coalition formation in the state.
According to the group, the mounting of pressure on Adeleke to leave PDP for APC is ill-advised and unnecessary.

It called on the governor to remain in the PDP and continue his good work for the good people of the state.
“We proceed to call on the governor to support the re-election of Mr President.

“President Tinubu’s ancestral state is Osun, and we have a duty to support our son, no matter the situation.
“We call on the governor to sustain his support for Mr President; it must be done as a matter of duty,” it said.

According to the group, the governor should not leave the party because he is a brand with huge street credibility and a huge command of the electorate in Osun.
“To win Osun, Adeleke’s brand is a must for the president without dilution,” it said.

The group, however, urged political leaders at the local and national levels to strike a deal between the Presidency and Adeleke.
It said that a deal was the most politically appropriate action within the context of Osun politics.

“We call on Mr President and the governor to enter into a mutual supportive agreement.
“Nothing like defection should be included.

FG to set up National Agribusiness Policy Mechanism (NAPM) to stabilise food prices
The Federal Government says it will inaugurate the National Agribusiness Policy Mechanism (NAPM) to strengthen agricultural productivity and stabilise food prices.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima disclosed this on Friday during a meeting of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU) Steering Committee at the Presidential Villa,
Shettima said the initiative will align with agricultural efforts across all government tiers through real-time data analytics.

“The Green Imperative Project (GIP) is an idea whose time has come. It has been in the incubation period for several years, and now it is coming to fruition; we have to get it right.
“We have had many interventions in this country in the past. We must make this work, and it is the states that will drive the process,” he said.

Shettima recalled that President Bola Tinubu approved N15 billion for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to prepare for floods as the rainy season kicks in.
“This is one of the first proactive decisions by the government to prepare for the flooding season,” the Vice-President noted.

Earlier, Marion Moon, Technical Assistant to the President on Agriculture, explained that NAPM would address challenges of high food inflation and agricultural yields that lag 60 per cent behind global averages.
Moon, who is also the Executive Secretary of PFSCU, revealed that the pilot survey for NAPM had been completed across 13 states, with a full launch planned for June 2025.

She said NAPM, supported by data analytics partnerships and a digital platform under development, was designed to tackle food inflation, inefficient subsidies, and outdated farming practices.
” This will give the country a unified framework to optimise public spending and drive sustainable rural development.”

On his part, Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa State, said the initiative would improved food security in the country.
“The aim is to ensure that there is food security in the country. As at today, vital issues that will lead to food security in this country had been discussed.

$220 million fine: FCCPC hails tribunal’s judgment against Meta, WhatsAp
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has hailed the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal for its judgment in the appeal filed by Meta Platforms Incorporated (Facebook) and WhatsApp LLC.

This is contained in a statement by the FCCPC Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr Ondaje Ijagwu, on Friday in Abuja.
Ijagwu said the Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, Mr Tunji Bello, also commended FCCPC’s legal team for their exceptional diligence.

He said the tribunal resolved issues one to seven in favour of the FCCPC, dismissing the appellants’ objections to the commission’s findings, orders, and legal competence.
Ijagwu said the tribunal’s three-member panel led by Mr Thomas Okosun, affirmed the commission’s authority and actions in nearly all the contested issues.

He said the tribunal determined that the commission complied with prevailing laws, discharged its mandate, and exercised its powers within the confines of the 1999 Constitution.
Ijagwu said the tribunal affirmed the fine of 220 million dollar against Meta Platforms Incorporated and WhatsApp LLC by the commission and further awarded 35,000 dollars to the FCCPC as cost of investigation.

He recalled that the case arose from a 38-month joint investigation initiated by the FCCPC and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission into the conduct, privacy practices, and consumer data policies of Meta Platforms and WhatsApp.
According to him, dissatisfied with the order last year, Meta and WhatsApp appealed to the tribunal, challenging both the legal basis and the findings of FCCPC.

”The Tribunal resolved issues one to seven largely in favour of the FCCPC, dismissing the appellants’ objections to the commission’s findings, orders, and legal competence.
”The tribunal held that the FCCPC acted within its statutory mandate, reaffirming its authority under Section 104 of the FCCPA to regulate competition and consumer protection even in regulated industries,” he said.
