Sultanate council breaks silence amid speculation of rift between Sultan and Sokoto State Gov
The Sultanate has clarified its stance on the proposed amendment of Sokoto State local government law 2008.
During the commencement of the public hearing on the amendment of the Sokoto State Local Government Law 2008, Dr. Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, the Sa’in Kilgori, addressed speculations surrounding the proposed changes.
He emphasised that the amendments are not intended to reduce the powers or functions of the Sultan.
Dispelling rumors of discord between Sultan Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar and Governor Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, Kilgori, who also serves as the district head of Kilgori and a council member of the Sultanate, affirmed that there are no underlying issues between the Sultanate and the state government.
Furthermore, Kilgori pointed out that the Sultanate is aware of enemies seeking to sow discord between them and the state government, labeling them as adversaries keen on creating unnecessary tension.
He said: “There is no issue between the Sultan and Governor Ahmed Aliyu at all. The Sultanate is ready to operate under any law elected through due process. We have operated under different laws in the past and we are ready to operate under the new law.
“The Sultanate has operated under the law proposed for amendment for the period of 16 years. The Sultanate is ready to work hand in hand with government.”
There has been earlier reports that the proposed amendment of Sokoto State Local Government Law 2008 would make the power of appointing district and village heads be vested only in the governor, while the Sultan’s power would be reduced to recommendation of persons to be appointed for the two positions.
