Speak out on fuel price controversy – Catholic Church tells Tinubu
The Catholic Church, Ibadan Archdiocese has called on President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to speak out on the fuel price controversy between Alhaji Aliko Dangote and the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC to put an end to the suffering of millions of Nigerians.
The orthodox church said this through its Archbishop, Most Rev. Gabriel ‘Leke Abegunrin in Ibadan yesterday when speaking with newsmen ahead of his 75th birthday celebration.
The cleric wondered why NNPC should be acting like middlemen dictating fuel prices for Aliko Dangote refinery.
While joining other Nigerians who cry daily for the reduction in the pump fuel price which has biting effects on the people, he told to President Tinubu that Nigerians are going through an extremely difficult situation in the country.
The archbishop said,” NNPC is the one creating the problem. Why can’t they allow Dangote to sell fuel at a price convenient for him? If he likes, he can sell it free to the people. How can NNPC be dictating the price he sells his fuel? They are the ones destroying things; not Dangote.”
“The Federal Government should stop that. Allow Dangote to sell his fuel at his price. Things will be better. There’s a lot of hunger, and cheating in the country. You can’t wait for the church to do everything.”
The clergyman who was flanked by Archbishop Felix Alaba Job,
Bishop Simon Faddoul, Fr. Richard Omolade, and Fr Gregory Oyelami, also clarified that contrary to the beliefs of some people that schools founded by churches charge fees that are non-affordable for church members, he added that fees charged by Catholic Schools are the cheapest.
He briefly highlighted several ways that the Catholic Church has been alleviating poverty in the country noting the church feeds people, gives them jobs and also meets other needs.
He tasked the youths of the church to work harder on their education and get good grades in school adding this will make it easier for them to be gainfully employed.
