Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Alliance (AAC), in the last general elections, Omoyele Sowore, has described President Bola Tinubu as “unwell and unfit” to govern the country.

Sowore posted this on his official X handle on Thursday in his reaction to a statement from the Nigerian presidency that Tinubu would not be attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly session in New York.

In his tweet, Sowore said, “Tinubu will skip #UNGA; after the Chinese trip and London medicals, this man can’t move any more!

“@officialABAT is unfit and unwell. Nigeria is not going to make progress with these types. Our people were on the ground in New York to confront Tinubu and his crew.”

SaharaReporters earlier reported that Tinubu will not be attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly session in New York and instead, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to UNGA.

This was according to Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser Information and Strategy to President Tinubu.

According to the statement from the presidential aide, the government claimed Tinubu wants to focus on domestic issues.

The statement reads, “President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly session in New York this year.

“The President has thus directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation.

“President Tinubu, who returned to the country last Sunday after his trip to China and the United Kingdom, wants to focus on domestic issues and address some of the country’s challenges, especially after the recent devastating flooding.

“At UNGA 79, Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement to the General Assembly, attend important sideline events, and hold bilateral meetings.

“The high-level General Debate, with the theme ‘Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations,’ will run from Tuesday, September 24, through Saturday, September 28, 2024.”
