Social Media Influencer ‘Ijele Speaks’ Spends One Year In Detention For Criticising Ebuka Obi As Activists Plan Protest
Ofoegbu was arrested and detained by the Nigeria Police Force in March 2024 for accusing Ebuka Obi, founder of Zion Prayer Movement Outreach, of performing staged miracles.
Popular social media influencer, Mr. Chizorom Harrison Ofoegbu, popularly known as Ijele Speaks II, has now spent one year in detention since he was arrested over his allegations against Evangelist Ebuka Obi.
Ofoegbu was arrested and detained by the Nigeria Police Force in March 2024 for accusing Ebuka Obi, founder of Zion Prayer Movement Outreach, of performing staged miracles.
In his viral post, Ijele called the pastor a liar and tagged all his miracles as deceits, urging the police to arrest him for turning his religious institution into a business enterprise.
Subsequently, the police in Abuja invited Ijele to their station for an alleged case of criminal intimidation, threat to life, cyberstalking, and cyberbullying against the pastor.
SaharaReporters reported that the police refused to release Ijele after he honoured their invitation and was subsequently taken to Keffi Correctional Centre in Nasarawa State where he has been held till date.
Ofoegbu’s prolonged incarceration has sparked concerns over freedom of speech in the country, with activists calling for his release.
To this end, activists are planning a peaceful protest to the federal ministry of justice Abuja to demand his immediate release and justice for him.
Announcing the planned protest and other activities targeted at securing Ofoegbu’s freedom, former pastor with Dunamis International Centre, Abraham Daniel, called on Nigerians across the country who care about freedom of speech and democracy to join the protest.
In a post on his Facebook page, he wrote, “This is to all irreligious communities in Nigeria. Our own man, Ijele Speaks Channel Two , is one year in that illegal detention today.
“By 8pm today, we shall be doing a solidarity for him, live on Facebook.
“To all those related or connected with his case,we shall be letting you all know that ijele is becoming an institution and you can’t stop him.
“Secondly, we are working on a peaceful solidarity walk to the federal ministry of justice Abuja demanding justice for ijele.
“Date and time shall be communicated soon. If you are in Abuja, or you want to be part of this solidarity walk, please DM.
“You can’t stop Ijele Speaks. Please if you are interested in a solidarity for Ijele Speaks Channel Two and strategies.”
