Six scavengers arrested for defacing Falomo Bridge
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority Monitoring and Enforcement Team dislodged scavengers who recently erected illegal structures under the Falomo Bridge along the Nigerian Law School on Victoria Island.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a post on X on Tuesday, said the structures were erected by scavengers who were earlier dislodged from under the bridge in Obalende.
“It was discovered that the new illegal structure was constructed by scavengers who were recently dislodged from Obalende under the bridge, constituting an environmental nuisance and defacing public facilities.
“This follow-up exercise and mop-up operation led to the arrest of six scavengers.
“The operation was to drive the agency’s mandate of creating a serene and habitable environment for Lagosians through the removal of illegal structures on walkways, road setbacks, and shanties that have become a major cause of drainage blockage and indiscriminate waste dumping in the state,” the commissioner wrote.
In late February, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps dislodged “miscreants” occupying pedestrian bridges in the state.
Wahab stated the officials dislodged some miscreants squatting on pedestrian bridges in the Oshodi area of the state to make the bridge safe for pedestrians.
