The cleric described them as beneficial for Nigerians despite opposition from Northern leaders.

The bills, currently under intense national debate, passed their second reading in the Senate last week.

Critics from the North, including governors, lawmakers, and traditional leaders, argued that the reforms could worsen the region’s economic struggles.

This divide has widened existing tensions between northern and southern stakeholders.

While Gumi praised the overall potential of the reforms, he identified the Value Added Tax (VAT) component as a sticking point, suggesting it requires adjustment to address nationwide concerns.

“I believe the contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all,” Gumi said.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has dismissed claims that the reforms favor specific states, asserting they aim to improve living standards across the country.
