Rivers sole administrator, Ibas sends message to lawmakers
The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has assured the lawmakers that efforts are ongoing to provide them with a suitable workspace.
He said this during an inspection of the new State Assembly Complex, located on Moscow Road in Port Harcourt.
Ibas said he is working to ensure the building is completed as planned so that legislative activities can resume.
The project, being handled by Monier Construction Company (MCC) Limited, includes 34 en-suite offices in a two-storey building, equipped with an elevator, gallery, meeting rooms, and a conference hall.
Ibas noted that after spending a few days in office, he noticed the legislature’s absence as a key part of the state’s governance system.
He stressed that completing the Assembly Complex is necessary to restore legislative operations.
He also mentioned that the state government has provided the needed funds, so it is now up to the contractor to finish the project according to the agreed timeline.
Ibas visited the site with the Head of Service, George Nwaeke, while the General Manager of MCC, Omaka Oko, led the tour around the construction area.
The administrator said that his mandate includes restoring law and order, which will allow the state to return to normal governance.
He added that completing the Assembly Complex is part of that goal and expressed hope that the project will be delivered on time.
He said, “I had been at the executive arm of the state governance structure and one of the pillars that is missing for now is the legislature and for them to function effectively, they also need a place to work from.
“And perhaps, I am yet to be sure that work is going on as expected. So that by the end of the six months, this place will be ready for those who need to use it.
“They (contractor) have a schedule and they have timelines that I believe they will like to adhere to.”
