Distressing footage has captured the moment a “jealous” woman doused her husband in alcohol and set fire to him in a cruel act of rage.

Ana Maria Paixao confessed to the shocking act, it is said, which led to Andre Luiz de Amorim Chapeta’s death of first-degree burns four days after the horror attack.

CCTV caught Ana Maria walking up to her 50-year-old husband, dousing him in an inflammable liquid described as alcohol before she sets him on fire using a cigarette lighter. He is then seen running from the back of the business premises in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, towards a bathroom to try to douse the flames with water.

Police confirmed the woman’s rage was carried out due to “jealousy” but she was released hours after her arrest because a court had yet to decide on a police request for her remand in custody. It was not immediately clear if she was now behind bars.

The attack happened in the early hours of Monday morning at the fishmonger’s premises in the Jardim America area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s second-most populous city. Andre Luiz spent four days in hospital but has since died. Police chief Flavio Ferreira said: “What she says is not what the image shows.

“The image shows the victim sitting in a chair. She arrives, coldly, throws the liquid and sets him on fire. She was not at that moment in a vulnerable situation, she was not in a situation in which she would be imminently attacked. On the contrary, as I said, he was sitting and posed no risk to her physical integrity at that moment.”

The investigation, initially categorised as an attempted homicide, is now said to have been reclassified as a “murder by cruel means” under Brazilian law, used to define those homicides where killers inflict an “intense and unnecessary suffering on their victims to obtain the desired result.”

Aggressors who use torture or fire or asphyxiate their victims can all face the charge.

Firefighters said they were mobilised just after 1am on Monday. The victim was rushed to Rio de Janeiro’s Getulio Vargas Hospital where he died.

Pictures of him covered in bandages lying in a hospital bed have been published on social media.

Police have confirmed they believe the wife acted out of “jealousy” following a row but have not gone into any further detail at this stage. Ana Maria told local press in an interview before her husband’s death and after her release from custody that she acted out of “self-defence” after being physically assaulted by her partner-of-30-years in an incident not picked up on camera, although the CCTV footage that has been published did not appear to back up her claims.
