principal condemns ‘education-na-scam’ mentality, prostitution among youths, others
Principal of Our Lady’s High School, Effurun, Delta State, Rev. Fr Israel Oshoke Inaede Esq, has lamented the prevalent ‘education na scam’ ideology among youths and school children of today, not only in Delta State but across the country.
This was just as also decried the increasing rate of Internet fraud, known as ‘Yahoo-Yahoo’ and prostitution, also known as ‘runs’ among school-age children.
Speaking while sharing the school’s remarkable success story with renowned human rights activist, Comrade Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho, Rev. Fr. Inaede said that the prevalence of these vices among youths is alarming.
Established in 1960 by the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Apostle, Our Lady’s High School has undergone significant transformations, including a name change during the era of the state government takeover of the school. However, in 2010, the school was returned to the Catholic Diocese of Warri, and its original name was restored and retained as a female boarding school.
The principal averred that under the management of the Missionary Sisters of Jesus and Mary, the school has witnessed tremendous growth, with a current population of over 280 students.
Rev. Fr. Inaede emphasized the school’s commitment to discipline, citing the presence of school psychologists and counsellors who work with students exhibiting deviant behaviour.
He said the school has also recorded impressive performances in external examinations, with students consistently achieving high scores.
Rev. Fr. Inaede attributed this success to the school’s focus on academic excellence and moral values.
Expressing concern about societal pressures negatively impacting children, Rev. Fr. Inaede condemned the ‘school na scam’ ideology, internet fraud otherwise called ‘yahoo-yahoo’, and female prostitution ring called ‘runs’, stressing that society is failing children.
He criticized parents who encourage their children to engage in internet fraud and prostitution, benefiting from the proceeds.
On the recent controversy surrounding Pope Francis’ stance on homosexuality, Rev. Fr. Inaede clarified that the Pope was quoted out of context.
He emphasized that the Church welcomes all sinners and seeks to save them through the word of God, adding, “Our Lady’s High School, Effurun, stands as a shining example of academic excellence, discipline, and moral values. The Church is not a museum for saints, but a hospital for sinners.”
The school’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who embody the values of compassion, empathy, and self-discipline is truly commendable.
