President Tinubu’s Closest Aide Resigns
A fresh wave of uncertainty has gripped the Presidency following the sudden resignation of Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed,the political adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,
Reliable sources within the Presidential Villa confirmed that Baba-Ahmed tendered his resignation about two weeks ago, though details of his decision remain sketchy.
The former spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) is said to have cited “personal reasons” in his resignation letter, but speculation is rife over the real motive behind his exit.
It is understood that the Presidency is yet to officially accept his resignation, adding to the intrigue surrounding the development.
Insiders suggest that his departure could signal deeper rifts within the administration, particularly in light of recent tensions between Baba-Ahmed and Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle.
Tensions Over NEF Criticism
Baba-Ahmed’s tenure in the Presidency has not been without controversy. His past affiliation with the NEF, a group that has been critical of the Tinubu administration, had placed him at odds with other high-ranking officials.
In April 2024, a rift emerged when Matawalle lashed out at Baba-Ahmed, insisting that northern appointees must actively defend the Tinubu government rather than remain silent.
This followed Baba-Ahmed’s criticism of Matawalle for dismissing the NEF as a “political paperweight” after the group claimed that the North had erred in voting for Tinubu in the 2023 elections.
In response, Baba-Ahmed argued that the Minister should have focused on showcasing the administration’s achievements rather than engaging in attacks on the NEF.
However, Matawalle fired back, accusing him of failing in his duty to protect and promote the government.
A Seasoned Bureaucrat Bows Out
Born on 11th September 1955, Dr Baba-Ahmed has enjoyed a distinguished career in public service. A retired senior civil servant, he once served as Chief of Staff to former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki. His extensive academic background includes studies at Ahmadu Bello University, the London School of Economics, and the University of Sussex.
Baba-Ahmed has held numerous high-ranking positions, including Permanent Secretary roles in various ministries and Secretary to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He was also a key figure in the Kaduna State Government and a vocal advocate for northern interests through his work with the NEF.
His appointment as Special Adviser in September 2023 was seen as an attempt to balance regional interests within the Presidency. However, his tenure was marred by internal tensions and ideological differences with some members of Tinubu’s cabinet.

With Baba-Ahmed’s resignation, political analysts believe that the Tinubu administration could face fresh challenges in navigating northern political dynamics. His exit raises questions about the government’s internal cohesion and whether further resignations may follow.
