President Tinubu approves creation of Federal University announces location
In a landmark move to address the educational and developmental needs of Southern Kaduna, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given his approval for the creation of a federal university in the region.
This decision marks a significant step in enhancing access to higher education and fostering regional growth.
Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the development during a condolence visit to the Kukah family in Ikulu Kingdom, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, Kaduna State. Shettima, who was in the area to mourn the passing of His Highness Yohanna Sidi Kukah, the Agwom Akulu of Ikulu Chiefdom, also revealed ongoing plans for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, further underscoring the government’s commitment to improving healthcare and infrastructure in Southern Kaduna.
According to a statement released by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima confirmed that discussions with local representatives, including Senator Danjuma La’ah and the member of the House of Representatives, had led to President Tinubu’s approval of the university project.
“With the collaboration of Senator Katung and other leaders from the region, we have successfully reached out to President Tinubu, and he has consented to the establishment of a federal university in Southern Kaduna,” Shettima said.
Speaking at the residence of the late traditional ruler, Shettima emphasized that the federal government remains committed to the development of Southern Kaduna.
He pointed to the appointment of General Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff as evidence of President Tinubu’s focus on enhancing security in the region.
“Be rest assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has the people of Kaduna and Southern Kaduna at heart,” Shettima assured.
The Vice President also praised Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State for his inclusive governance approach, noting that effective government must connect all parts of the state to ensure every community feels valued and supported.
Shettima reiterated that the federal government would collaborate with the state to improve essential infrastructure, particularly roads, in Southern Kaduna.
Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, who hosted the Vice President during the visit, expressed his gratitude to Shettima on behalf of the Kukah family.
Reflecting on the challenges of the region, Bishop Kukah pointed out the difficult road conditions, which made the three-and-a-half-hour journey to Ikulu a challenge. “We are honored to have you here, and we know that you will remain a friend of the Ikulu nation and its people,” he said.
The approval of the federal university in Southern Kaduna represents a major milestone in the region’s educational and socio-economic development, promising new opportunities for students and residents alike.
