Political Implications of Tinubu’s Supreme Court Victory and The Future of Ndigbo in Nigeria
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, issues this press release to analyze the political implications of President Bola Tinubu’s recent victory at the Supreme Court and its consequences for the future of Ndigbo in Nigeria.
We commend Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate, for his remarkable display of bravery. By transforming a silent political party into a viable third force, he has elevated the bar of political consciousness among Nigerians. After years of dwindling confidence in the electoral process, his efforts have ignited hope and inspired many to actively participate in politics.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasizes the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). To restore confidence in the electoral process, INEC must undergo an immediate top-to-bottom restructuring, ensuring accountability and transparency. The flaws witnessed during the 2023 elections necessitate swift action to regain the trust of the Nigerian people.
We express our heartfelt gratitude to Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Pa Ayo Adebanjo-led Afenifere, Dr. Pogu Bitrus-led Middle Belt Forum, Pa Edwin-led Pan Niger Delta (PANDEF), and all others who stood firmly in support of Mr. Peter Obi. Their unwavering commitment to the cause is commendable.
Special appreciation is extended to the Nyesom Wike-led G5 Governors for their instrumental role in sinking the ambitions of Atiku Abubakar and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s lifelong ambition to become President has reached its conclusion. It is now the opportune moment for him to gracefully retire from active politics, recognizing that his age necessitates this sacrifice to salvage the PDP, which he externally damaged in 2015 by aligning with the APC to remove Jonathan, and internally in 2023 by disregarding the zoning formula that favored the Southeast and the Igbo people.
The political future of Ndigbo lies in the hands of our youth. They must proactively build bridges across regions, fostering unity and cooperation. It is through their concerted efforts that Ndigbo can aim for the presidency in 2031, contributing their unique perspectives and advocating for a fair and inclusive Nigeria.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains steadfast in its commitment to the progress and welfare of the Igbo people. We call on all Igbo sons and daughters to unite, rally behind our shared aspirations, and work tirelessly towards a future where Ndigbo can attain the highest levels of political leadership in Nigeria.
