The Nigerian police have invited the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for questioning following an incident during the recent Eid festival in Kano.

On March 30, while the emir was heading to the Kofar Mata Eid Ground for prayers, a member of his security team was stabbed to death, and several others were injured.

Earlier, security agencies in the state had canceled all durbar activities, including the traditional horse procession, due to security concerns.

Despite the ban, the emir proceeded with his march to the prayer grounds on foot, as customarily done, without participating in the banned equestrian procession.

After the incident, sources revealed that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had instructed the state commissioner of police to arrest the emir.

However, the commissioner clarified that the emir’s actions did not violate the durbar ban, as he did not use horses for his procession, as is traditionally expected.

Not fully satisfied with this explanation, the Inspector-General directed the Force Intelligence Department to handle the investigation and formally invited the emir to Abuja for questioning.

A letter signed by CP Olajide Ibitoye was sent, requesting the emir to appear at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja on April 8 at 10 a.m. for an investigation into the incident that occurred during the Sallah celebrations.

Sources close to the palace noted that the emir had not yet officially received the invitation at the time of reporting.
