Police speak on terrorists occupying Abuja, curfew declaration
The Nigeria Police Force has reacted to rumours circulating on WhatsApp and social media about the presence of 79 terrorists in the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The message, which was shared widely, claimed that a group of 79 terrorists had settled in the Lugbe area, and that a curfew would be imposed in the vicinity.
It also disclosed that the police were aware of the situation but had not taken any action.
The message was falsely attributed to ACP Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer.
But in a statement released on Sunday night, the police debunked the report, describing it as completely false and urging the public to disregard it.
According to the police, intelligence from various security agencies has shown that there are no terrorists hiding in Lugbe or any surrounding areas.
The police also confirmed that the message, which mentioned a curfew and was attributed to an official, was fabricated by unknown individuals aiming to cause panic and disrupt peace in the FCT.
The police have urged the public to trust only verified information from official sources, including the Nigeria Police Force’s social media accounts (@PoliceNG on X, @ngpolice on Facebook, and @nigeriapoliceforce on Instagram).
They cautioned citizens to double-check any security news before sharing it, especially when it comes from unofficial or unknown sources.
The police have also reminded citizens to stay alert and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via emergency contact numbers.
The Nigeria Police Force assured the public of their commitment to ensuring safety and maintaining peace in the FCT and across the country.
