Police Service Commission Deploys Nine New Commissioners, Warns Against Abuse Of Tactical Units
The Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), warned: “Tactical Units are not abused at the State Commands and not used to do the work meant for recognised Departments.”
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has cautioned that tactical units should not replace recognised Police Departments, particularly at State Command Headquarters.
The Commission in a statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani, Head, Press and Public Relations observed that several State Commissioners had misused these units, rendering established departments ineffective despite being led by Deputy Commissioners of Police.
During the screening of nine Commissioners recommended by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for appointment and posting to state commands, the PSC emphasised that the new Commissioners must allow recognised Police Departments to function properly.
The Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), warned: “Tactical Units are not abused at the State Commands and not used to do the work meant for recognised Departments.”
He expressed concern over the misuse of power by these units and stressed the importance of working with Deputy Commissioners assigned by the IGP.
DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd) who coordinated the interview, urged the new Commissioners to “work with their subordinates and establish trust with the people – the youths, traditional leaders and organisations such as NBA.”
He further advised them to “refrain from establishing squads that are not necessary.”
The Commission has approved the IGP’s recommendation for the appointment of Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba from Kano State as CP Zamfara; Breret Emmanuel Simon from Plateau as CP Taraba; Christopher Ado Emmanuel from Niger as CP Yobe; and Olusegun Eyitayo Omosayin from Ondo as CP Cross River.
Other newly appointed Commissioners include Adamu Abdullahi Elleman from Jigawa as CP Niger; Sani Omolori Aliyu from Kogi as CP Bauchi; Bello Shehu from Gombe as CP Katsina; Saka Adewale Ajao from Ogun as CP FCT; and Ojo Adekimi from Ekiti as CP Kwara.
The newly appointed State Command Commissioners underwent an interactive oral interview, led by DIG Lakanu, who represents the Police in the Commission.
PSC’s stance on Tactical Units follows concerns over their growing influence, with the Commission reiterating that recognised departments must not be sidelined.
The new Commissioners have been urged to work in collaboration with their subordinates and avoid any unnecessary creation of special squads.
