Pirates Abduct 10 Passengers In Bonny Waterway In Rivers State

Suspected pirates have abducted 10 passengers from a boat travelling in the Bonny waterway, Rivers State.

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Rivers Commercial District, confirmed the incident.
Israel Pepple, the State Chairman of the union, reported that the victims were seized during their journey, PUNCH reports.
He urged the government and security agencies to enhance security in the waterways to curb such attacks.
Pepple stated, “As I speak to you right now, ten persons have been kidnapped while travelling from Bonny to Port Harcourt. And the others are still afloat in the River waiting for rescue.”
He further appealed to the Rivers State Governor, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, and the Commissioner of Police to address the situation urgently.
This incident follows a recent protest by maritime union members against rising pirate attacks. Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the state Police Command, confirmed the attack and assured that an investigation is underway.
“Yes we are aware. Investigation is ongoing to ensure that they are rescued unhurt. The Commissioner of Police has ordered the Divisional Police Officer and other tactical units to also ensure the arrest of the hoodlums and make them face justice,” Iringe-Koko added.
