PDP will win Lagos LG election – Deputy chair
The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has said it will win the local government election scheduled to hold this year in the state.
But the party said the result of the election would be manipulated, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress of always rigging LG polls in the state.
Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, the PDP Deputy Chairman, Tai Benedict, said the party had won many elections in the state while the APC had been rigging.
The deputy chairman expressed doubt about the fairness of the LG election, adding that its outcome was predictable.
He said, “We may win the election, but I must confess that the Lagos PDP is in a more difficult situation. President Bola Tinubu is the master planner of election outcomes in Lagos State.
“We saw what happened in Edo and Ondo states. This doesn’t stop us from participating in the election. We will do what we can and I know we will win, but it’s left to the powers that be to release the result.”
Benedict hinted that the PDP might merge with other parties to oust the ruling APC.
“It is not too late and early to talk about a merger. The PDP has started reconciliation at the national level and we have also started at the state level,” he explained.
Reacting to Benedict’s allegation, the Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, said no one in Lagos State took PDP seriously any more as a political party.
“From time immemorial, this party only comes alive whenever there’s an election. They are known to converge to share election funds which often put their party in disarray until the next payday,” he alleged.
Oladejo added that the APC’s victory during the last national elections was not an accident.
“If a party’s only claim to success is that it was rigged out of victory in several elections in the past, the capacity and political sagacity of its leadership should be questioned. It’s an admission of failure, incompetence, systemic deficiency and inability to lead,” he added.
