Outrage as Abuja Council Demands N500, 000 as TV Levy
The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has ignited public fury after demanding that a business pay a N500,000 levy for owning a television set. The controversial charge has prompted widespread criticism and legal challenges, raising fresh concerns over excessive taxation in Nigeria.
The issue came to light when AMAC issued a demand notice to Tela Network Ltd, an Abuja-based infotech company, requiring it to pay a total of N2 million. The amount included N1 million in arrears for 2023 and 2024, a N500,000 fine, and a N500,000 levy for 2025. The firm was given a 14-day deadline to make the payment to a designated bank.
In response, Tela Network Ltd, through its legal representatives, rejected the levy, arguing that the company does not engage in radio or television broadcasting and should not be subject to such fees. The firm has requested AMAC to provide legal justification for the demand.
AMAC, however, defended its position, citing a 2012 by-law that classifies businesses into tax categories. According to the council, companies categorized under “Computer Service Generally” fall under Category B, which requires an annual TV/Radio license fee of N1 million.
The levy has drawn sharp criticism from Abuja residents and legal experts alike. Many argue that the tax is an unfair financial burden, particularly given the country’s ongoing economic struggles. Residents also question why they should pay such high fees for television ownership when public services remain inadequate.
Legal experts warn that such tax policies could stifle business growth and discourage investment in Abuja. Meanwhile, calls for a review of AMAC’s tax framework continue to grow, as affected businesses and concerned citizens demand transparency and fairness in taxation policies.
