One Confirmed Dead, About 20 Others Missing As Boat Capsizes In Sokoto Community

Rescue efforts have so far recovered one body, while approximately 15 survivors have managed to reach the shore.

 

A team of officials, including Aliyu Shehu Kafidangi, Head of Operations at the National Emergency Management Agency’s Sokoto Operations Office, Nasiru Garba, Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, and representatives from the Red Cross, have visited the scene of the boat accident to collect data on the victims.

Preliminary investigations, based on eyewitness accounts and survivor testimonies, suggest that the canoe capsized due to overloading, according to NTA.

 

The boat was carrying a diverse group of passengers, including elderly individuals, women, children, and youths, who were traveling to their farms on the other side of the river.

 

A joint effort by the NEMA Search and Rescue Team and local divers is currently underway to locate the missing individuals.
