Obasa Family Disowns Impeached Speaker, Denies Any Association
The Obasa family of the Ikemo Ruling House in Ojo town, Lagos State, has publicly dissociated itself from the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, declaring that he has no ancestral ties to their lineage.
Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached on January 13 while away from the country, lost his position after more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house voted against him over allegations of misconduct and other offences. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female Speaker of the legislative body in the South West state.
Reports indicate that Obasa’s gubernatorial ambitions for the 2027 elections have been a significant factor in the political power struggle unfolding in Lagos State.
A former federal lawmaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Adekunle Obasa, speaking on behalf of the Obasa family in Ojo, firmly denied any relationship with the embattled politician. In a statement, he clarified that Mudashiru Obasa is originally from Abeokuta, Ogun State, and has no family ties to the Obasa lineage in Ojo.
“I want to clarify to the public that I, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Adekunle Obasa, born August 29, 1970, and a member of the Obasa Family from Ojo Town, Ojo LGA, Lagos State, am not connected with Mudashiru Obasa, who hails from Abeokuta, Ogun State, despite his role as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. He is not in any way connected to my family root of ‘Obasa’ in Ojo LGA, Lagos State,” he stated.
Hon. Tajudeen further debunked claims that he had facilitated a deal for the former Speaker to acquire a membership in the Obasa family of Ojo to boost his political ambitions. He described the rumors as false, malicious, and unfounded, stressing that there had been no agreement or transaction involving the family name.
“There is no agreement or transaction involving Mudashiru Obasa and the Obasa family regarding the sale or transfer of family root for him to claim. This sounds very funny and fraudulent. If any concrete evidence emerges linking him to these rumors, I will not hesitate to pursue legal action,” he added.
He also distanced the family from allegations involving Cardinal James Omolaja Odunmbaku, another politician from Ogun State, who was rumored to have influenced Mudashiru Obasa’s decision to bury his late father in Lagos for political positioning.
The Obasa family has called for an end to the speculation, emphasizing that their focus remains on contributing positively to their community and upholding their heritage.
As Lagos State navigates its shifting political landscape, the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa continues to generate controversy, with various stakeholders making efforts to reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
