NYSC Reacts To Claim That Art Minister Musawa Is A Serving Corp Member
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) administration has officially verified that Hannatu Musawa, the Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, is indeed a current serving corps member.
Eddy Megwa, the NYSC spokesperson, confirmed Musawa’s status as a corps member in response to inquiries from TheCable, a digital media platform.
Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) had raised concerns that Musawa was concurrently participating in the one-year mandatory youth service while holding a cabinet position in President Bola Tinubu’s government.
Musawa was among the 45 ministers inaugurated into the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday by President Tinubu.
HURIWA called on NYSC management to require Musawa to make a choice between fulfilling her national youth service obligation and retaining her ministerial appointment.
The group questioned why Musawa’s status was not disclosed to the public prior to her screening by the Senate for the ministerial role.
HURIWA alleged that Musawa had abandoned her NYSC responsibilities in Ebonyi state earlier but later expressed her intention to complete the service.
In September 2020, former President Muhammadu Buhari nominated Musawa as a national commissioner representing the north-west geopolitical zone on the national pension commission board.
However, the Senate rejected her nomination in October of the same year based on a report from the committee on establishment and public service matters, which indicated that Musawa had failed to provide her NYSC certificate or exemption letter.
