NOA Unveils New Multipurpose National ID Card For Nigerians To Replace Existing Multiple Cards

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has revealed details of Nigeria’s proposed General Multipurpose National Identity Card (GMPC), aimed at simplifying identification and access to services for citizens.

NOA in a statement on Sunday said the GMPC is designed to serve various purposes, including financial transactions, government services, and travel-related needs, while reducing the burden of carrying multiple cards.
From the fourth paragraph, the announcement explained: “The GMPC will serve multiple purposes, combining several existing cards into one.
“This new card will eliminate the need for citizens to carry multiple forms of identification, making it more convenient for everyday use.”
To ensure financial integration, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has partnered with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS).
“The GMPC will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, a domestic payment system supported by NIBSS,” NOA stated.
This move aims to promote locally developed financial infrastructure and reduce reliance on foreign payment systems.
Citizens interested in the GMPC can apply using their National Identification Number (NIN) through the NIMC self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks.
Once approved, the card will be issued by the applicant’s bank, following protocols similar to debit and credit cards.
Cardholders can pick up their GMPC at designated centres or opt for home delivery at an additional cost.
NOA assured, “With these guidelines, the new GMPC seeks to provide citizens with a more efficient and versatile means of identification while improving access to financial and government services.”
