Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s recent statement justifying his support for the re-election of Bayelsa state governor, Douye Diri, in the state’s November 11, 2023, off-cycle governorship poll has stirred reactions among Nigerians

Speaking during a Yuletide visit by Governor Diri and a high-powered delegation to his residence in Yenagoa, Jonathan asserted that he owed no one apologies for backing Diri’s candidacy.

In a statement by Diri’s chief press secretary, Daniel Alabrah, it was revealed that Dame Patience Jonathan, the wife of the former President, was also present during the visit. Jonathan cited Diri’s visionary leadership and developmental efforts, especially in maintaining peace and stability in the state, as the basis for his public endorsement during the campaigns.

Jonathan stated, “I did what I did during the governorship election, and I have no apologies to anybody because I know that the governor and his team were doing very well, especially in the area of peace and stability of the state.” He commended Diri for reducing the excesses of cult groups in Yenagoa and urged him to continue addressing security issues to attract investors.

Reacting to Jonathan’s endorsement, Nigerians expressed varied opinions on social media platforms. Some commended the former President for supporting a candidate who demonstrated commitment to peace and development. Others questioned the role of endorsements in elections and emphasized the need for objective assessment of candidates’ performance.

Diri, in his response, expressed gratitude for Jonathan’s support, describing the endorsement as more valuable than billions of naira. He credited the endorsement for the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election and highlighted the stability it brought to the state.

The governor also thanked President Bola Tinubu for ensuring a peaceful, free, and credible election in Bayelsa. Accompanying the governor on the visit were National Assembly members, state executive council members, and other dignitaries.
