Nigerian Woman Jailed In Ghana For Trafficking Eight Young Girls For Sexual Exploitation
It was learnt that, a 28-year-old Nigerian, Ms. Favour Ugwu, one of the traffickers, was arrested and jailed for eight years in prison, by the court in Ghana on account of human trafficking.
No fewer than eight young Nigerian girls have been rescued from human traffickers in Ghana.
The rescued girls, who were said to be aged between 15 and 22, from various states across Nigeria, were lured to Ghana under false promises of employment but were forced into sexual exploitation.
It was learnt that, a 28-year-old Nigerian, Ms. Favour Ugwu, one of the traffickers, was arrested and jailed for eight years in prison, by the court in Ghana on account of human trafficking.
In a statement signed by Gabriel Odu, Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) on Wednesday noted that there are still many more trafficked victims waiting to be rescued and thanked the Ghanaian security agencies for their co operation.
The Chairman/CEO, NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, receiving the young ladies at the NiDCOM Annex Office in Lagos, thanked the president’s wife, Oluremi Tinubu, for her support in facilitating the return of the girls.
She also acknowledged the significant role of Chief Callistus Elozieuwa, President, Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana Chapter, the Nigerian embassy in Ghana and the Interpol Units of Nigeria and Ghana.
Furthermore, the Chairman/CEO said the rescued girls have been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to ensure that the girls had safe and comfortable accommodations pending their formal rehabilitation and reintegration with their families.
“The rescued girls, aged between 15 and 22, hail from various states across Nigeria, including Ebonyi, Akwa-Ibom, Imo, Plateau, and Cross River, were lured to Ghana under false promises of employment but were forced into sexual exploitation,” the statement added.
