Agnes Oladehinde, a Lagos State resident, has taken to social media to lament the gross negligence by staff at Gbagada General Hospital in Lagos, which she claims led to the death of her nephew who needed critical medical care.
In a video shared on social media and sighted by SaharaReporters on Sunday, Agnes recounted their ordeal at the hospital beginning on February 9, when they took her pregnant sister, Susan Okolie, to the hospital for childbirth.
She described how a series of negligent and avoidable mistakes by the hospital staff in various units, such as incorrect names on forms, mislabeling of lab test samples, and doctors’ failure to deliver her sister’s baby through cesarean section (CS), led to her nephew’s death.

According to Agnes, the doctors never asked if her sister would consent to a CS. After the child was delivered and complications arose, the doctors claimed they had informed her, but she had refused.
She further mentioned that even after the child’s death, the hospital staff’s negligence continued as they labelled the baby’s corpse with another family’s name in the mortuary instead of their own.
Agnes said, “My name is Agnes Oladehinde and I’m a sister to Susan Okolie. We have been in this hospital since Sunday and all we have experienced is unfortunate occurrences.
“This hospital is Gbagada General Hospital and I can tell you for a fact that since we have been in this hospital, every unit we have gone to, there has been a mistake or the other.
“First of all, when I was taking samples to the lab for a test for my sister, the lab attendant sent me to the ward that the sample was not properly labeled.
“My nephew put to bed on Tuesday morning and the baby needed critical care and they were given us forms to go and get tests done for him, and they made mistakes on the name. They wrote the name of another baby on the forms.
“This morning, we were informed that our baby gave up and he couldn’t make it.
“We were supposed to clear the baby and request for his body, which we did but when we got to the mortuary, we realized that the baby they were giving us had another name that is not our name. Our baby is Okolie’s baby but on the body of the baby they gave was Adefisan’s baby.
“I think that this is a gross negligence on the part of the hospital staff and even the hospital management, because from the doctors, since we came, they didn’t tell us what was wrong with my sister.
“They didn’t even advise us to do anything. But the moment she put to bed, everybody was just asking us why did she not do CS.
“They (doctors) claimed that they said she should do CS but she said no. My sister was not asked if she wanted to do a CS. My sister was not even asked if she wanted to do cervical tightening.”
“At some point, the doctors were saying that she said no when they asked her, but my sister did not say no,” she said.
“We are not religious people and we are not against any form of treatment.”
SaharaReporters’ attempts to obtain a response from the Lagos State Ministry of Health were unsuccessful.
Multiple calls made to the mobile phone of the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, went unanswered.
Additionally, a text message sent to him had not been responded to by the time this report was filed.
