According to the police commissioner, the Command had launched a manhunt on the criminal gang after the attack and killing of the two police officers on escort duty from Enugu State Police Command.
He explained that the gangsters were trailed to Ogboji in Orumba South Local Government Area of the state where a shootout ensued between the criminals and the police operatives, during which, three of the gangsters were killed while two police officers were injured, adding that one of the injured officers has been treated and discharged while the second victim has undergone brain surgery and AK-47 ammunition removed from his skull.
The CP said that “On December 28, 2023, the gang was trailed to Ogboji (in Orumba South Local Government Area) where a shootout ensued, three of the gangsters were neutralised, four IEDs were recovered alongside two Pump Action guns, a walkie Talkie handset, 16 live cartridges and a Lexus SUV.
“In that encounter, two service personnel were injured. One has been treated and discharged from the hospital, while the second personnel underwent a brain surgery and had AK-47 ammunition extracted from his skull.
“In that encounter, we rescued a 51-year-old man who was abducted at Igboukwu on the same day the gang was smashed.
“Having attacked the police personnel earlier and killed two of them, they thought they would have a free day roaming across Anambra State and kidnapping people at will but they discovered to their utter regret that we don’t quit or surrender.
