Nigerian Governor Escapes Unhurt As Youths Attack His Convoy With Objects
The governor of Benue State, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, was reportedly attacked by a group of young individuals in the Ugondu community of Makurdi LGA.
The youths, who were protesting against the burial of Engr. Michael Vaatia, the proprietor of Vaatia College, within their community, pelted the governor’s convoy with stones.
It has been reported that six of the protesting youths have been arrested by the police for their actions.
The governor had visited Vaatia College to assess the preparations for the burial, which is scheduled to take place within the school premises on Thursday.
The enraged youths from Ugondu allegedly entered the school premises and vandalized the grave.
During the governor’s address to community leaders at the school, a large group of individuals were observed chanting war songs.
It was reported that these youths disrupted the event as security escorts tried to prevent their entry into the school grounds, resulting in some members of the governor’s entourage being unable to enter.
Eyewitnesses claim that the youths resorted to firing gunshots into the air in an attempt to intimidate people, but their efforts were ultimately thwarted when the police’s specialized unit known as Operation Zenda arrived.
Numerous individuals were apprehended and taken into custody.
Governor Alia took the opportunity to caution the leaders of Ugondu community, including former Senator Fred Orti, retired Permanent Secretary Akange Audu, Ter Makurdi, and other traditional rulers, against engaging in actions that may lead to chaos and disunity within the state.
“I have come to correct some misgivings that happened in the rulership of your son as governor.
“I sent both the Tiv, Idoma, and other tribes overseas for training without discrimination.
“I want to believe you, the traditional and community leaders, denying involvement in what has happened.
“Surely, some youths arrested will make confessions and if they mention your name, be ready to go and answer.”
