NEED TO EMBRACE IMO STATE STANDARD MEASUREMENT CUPS
The provision of these standard measurement cups by Imo State Consumer Protection Council (CPC) under the leadership of Hon. Mrs Obioma Okafor is to ensure that consumers in the state are adequately protected from being shortchanged by grain dealers.
The standard measurement cups are very important because its affordability in terms of the cost price of the unit measure. Homes which may not afford to buy grains in bags often opt for a few cups to sustain their families.
In the past, the most common and popular unit of measure of food stuff in every market across Nigeria is Mudu. Mudu originated in northern Nigeria grain markets as unit of measure for rice, beans, garri which had become an acceptable form of measure in other grain markets across the country. When a Mudu is filled with grains to a conical top, it’s approximately 1.5kilograms.
Recently, traders tamper with the Mudu, Milk Cup and Custard container used in measuring grains to make more gains, thereby subjecting consumers to tremendous hardship.
As this ugly practice persistently occur in our markets, consumers continued to be shortchanged by greedy traders. This prompted the government of Imo State through Consumer Protection Council (CPC) to initiate the standard measurement cups to aliviate the sufferings of consumers in the state.
These measurement cups have undergone rigorous regulatory processes at both state and federal levels and had been approved by Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Abuja, under the Department of Weight and Measures.
According to the DG Imo CPC, Hon. Mrs Obioma Okafor, these measurement cups is part of the state government’s effort to ensure that citizens get value for what they purchase with their money which is encapsulated in the 3R mantra. “No more, I bought two cups of garri or rice, when I get home, it was one and half”, she said. It is important we support this vision for the interest of all.
