Nationwide hardship: Federal Govt sets up Presidential body to tackle rising cost of food
The presidency has taken decisive steps to combat escalating commodity prices and widespread food insecurity by engaging states, development partners, and other stakeholders.
Vice President Kashim Shettima inaugurated the Presidential Food Systems Coordination Unit (PFSCU) on Friday, July 12 as part of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to alleviate hunger and economic hardship.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Shettima emphasized the severity of the food security crisis and stressed the need for collective action to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic foundations. He clarified that PFSCU’s role complements rather than replaces the Ministry of Agriculture, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling the crisis.
Shettima also referenced initiatives like the Green Imperative Programme, aimed at catalyzing agricultural industrialization through public-private partnerships, as integral to PFSCU’s agenda.
State governors involved in the committee outlined strategies to modernize agricultural practices, increase crop yields, and enhance Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in food production. Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State emphasized the state’s agricultural potential and commitment to enhancing food production.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State stressed the need for coordinated efforts, citing challenges such as low productivity and population growth affecting national food security. He called for investments in commercial agriculture, improved funding, and enhanced security for farmers.
Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State proposed his state as a pilot for the President’s food security initiatives, highlighting substantial investments in agricultural mechanization and irrigation systems.
The meeting also saw commitments from international partners, including the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), pledging support for Nigeria’s agricultural development efforts.
Their collective support underscores renewed commitment to addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the country.
