A 24-year-old mother, identified as Sofia Nkwor, has explained why she dumped her 13-month-old baby in a well on April 26, 2024 at Araya community, Isoko South council area of Delta State, saying she regretted her action.

The suspect, who was paraded by the Nigeria Police, Delta State Command, is a native of Ushie in Ndokwa east of the state and former bar attendant. She was paraded alongside 14 other criminals by the state Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda.

While speaking, Sofia said being an orphan, she had nobody to care for her after the boyfriend who impregnated her denied ownership of the baby.

“The father rejected the baby, I stay with my grandma. She rejected me and the baby.

“I regret my actions, I feel bad. I was in a bad mood the time I did it. I have no helper. It is only me taking care of the baby, doing everything. I am tired,” she explained.

The Police Commissioner said children who were playing around had discovered the abandoned child floating on the well and subsequently reported the matter to the local vigilante who alerted the police.
