Aminu Bashir, a suspected robber accused of attacking a motorcycle rider, Sadiq Ibrahim, and stealing his motorcycle, has been apprehended by the Sagamu Police Division of the Ogun State Command, PUNCH Metro reports.

The suspect was arrested around 10:30 am on Monday, during a stop-and-search operation at the Sagamu Tollgate.

A police source familiar with the arrest, who requested anonymity due to lack of authorisation, informed PUNCH Metro that a joint patrol of Nigeria’s Vigilante Group and officers from the Sagamu Division stopped the suspect for questioning.

The suspect, along with an accomplice identified only as Shamsu, who is reportedly on the run, allegedly attacked the motorcycle rider, inflicting serious injuries before stealing his vehicle.

When the suspect failed to provide a satisfactory response to the security officers’ questions, he was arrested and taken to the police station, along with the seized Bajaj motorcycle with the number plate, OGUN DGB 864.

“We stopped him while he was on a red Bajaj motorcycle. His appearance seemed very suspicious, so we began questioning him. When he couldn’t respond satisfactorily, we took him to the station,” the officer told PUNCH Metro on Tuesday.

When contacted on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, informed our correspondent that the suspect had confessed to the crime and added that efforts were underway to apprehend the accomplice who had remained at large.

The PPRO said, “Bashir has admitted to the crime, saying that the other suspect lured the motorcyclist to the Iwelepa area under the pretence of being a bricklayer to carry out the robbery.

“He stated that after the successful operation, he began using the motorcycle for commercial purposes before being apprehended by our officers.

“Detectives searched his apartment, where they recovered various items, including machetes, shovels, and other exhibits. The victim has been taken to the hospital for medical treatment.”

A few weeks ago, PUNCH Metro reported that the command arrested three members of a motorcycle-snatching syndicate that had been terrorising the Owode-Egba area of Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area in the state.
